Meet Yana the Pekingese. She will faithfully guard your most beloved jewels or trinkets in her case. This portrait is so charming and lifelike, you may find yourself talking to her and booping her nose.
Hand-painted by an artist from the Russian village of Kholui, one of the primary places of study for the art of lacquer boxes. We have not yet identified this talented artist's signature (right) but what is clear is the darling pup's name, "Yana" (center).
Vintage, date not yet known. Condition suggests this may be young vintage although these lacquer boxes tend to age fairly well. Box interior measures 4x3" and approximately .75" deep with lid closed. Excellent condition with very little crazing and no chips. Simply beautiful.
The Pekingese breed was developed thousands of years ago during the Han Dynasty in China. A royal and majestic dog, they are a living version of the foo dog or guardian lion.
