Commemorative jewel box from the 1894 Exhibition universelle in Lyon, France. Among the exhibitions were the first incubators for premature babies, patented in 1889 by a Dr. Lion. Nearly 4 million people visited the fair between April and November, including President Sadi Carnot who attended a banquet there in June. Unfortunately for him –and for the fair’s PR team– he was stabbed on site and died the next day. Someone else who visited and we hope had a nice time, bought this jewel box as a memento.
Lovely silver foil in the design reflects light. Très français.
Very good condition for its age. The cushion liner is not glued in; it is in nice condition. If you wish to replace the cushion with a new liner, please email to inquire about materials and cost.
