The only wild horse species alive today is Przewalski's Horse, Equus ferus przewalskii, which once roamed Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. The population crashed in the late 18th Century, but late 20th Century conservation biologists came to the rescue and reintroduced them in a few Mongolian protected areas. About 3-400 Przewalski's Horses remain today.
