Rosy-headed Glassbirds

Regular price $250.00 $225.00 Sale

Rare in the wild, but sometimes found in captivity is the Rosy-headed Glassbird. Enhanced by botanical designs, you might imagine them nested in a patch of
forest where tiny wildflowers fall onto their feathers. A dreamy, ethereal work of art, their glowing transparent bodies are made of plique-a-jour cloisonné, a painstaking technique that results in heavenly beauty. This type of enamelwork requires a high level of skill and patience, to embed a thin layer of glass -in colors that melt at different temperatures- onto a metal filigree form. Genius.

Vintage gold plated metal and glass enamel. Unmarked. Chinese, mid to late 20th Century. Approximately 4" from beak to tail; 2.25" tall. Excellent condition with very few minuscule hairline cracks (possibly from production rather than age or use). Sold as a pair; stands included.

Most bird species are sexually dimorphic, meaning that the male and female look different in size, shape, and or feather colors/patterns. This pair is monomorphic. Some research in the 90's indicated that dimorphic birds tend to be more monogamous, while those that look alike tend toward polygamy!
