We're getting Georgia O'Keefe vibes with this ram head pendant holding a metallic pastel painted rose. A lovely, unusual piece. On a small neck, the longer chain can be doubled to create a layered choker with the ram hanging lower.
Vintage gold plated and painted metal. Unknown maker. Approximate measurements: shorter chain with ram is 19" long, ram head and flower 2" long; longer chain is 26" long. Both chains are attached with the same clasp.
Ms. O'Keefe's infamous Rams Head with Hollyhock from 1935 was modeled after objects gathered from her surroundings in New Mexico. Dry animal skulls and bones were commonly found across the landscape at that time, as the Dust Bowl followed by a drought left many animals in dire straights. Ms. O'Keefe has been quoted as saying she found more life in the bones than the living creatures. "To me they are as beautiful as anything I know. To me they are strangely more living than the animals walking around—hair, eyes, and all, with their tails switching.” (As quoted on artnet.com.)
