This adorable pelican's whopping jaw is perfect for hanging your earrings, or holding dried botanicals to create a playful shelfie. Waves and fish add a fun interpretive element to the design.
Vintage cloisonné. Unmarked. Approximate measurements: 3.5" tall, 4.25" from pouch to tail; pouch dish 1" wide, 2.5" deep and reaches waaaaay back (so be careful what you drop in there). Note: colors bled in production and some areas on the pouch and face are not crisp, but what this piece lacks in fine-lined enamelwork, it makes up for in quirkiness and charm.
Shown here with our jellyfish earrings, available for purchase under a separate listing.
Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) eat by grabbing small fish by the mouthful. Although they sometimes fish from the shore, they often forage from above. A pelican can dive into the ocean from 60 feet in the air. Once underwater their pouch blows up to take in more than two gallons of water to trap their prey.
