Magnolia blossoms do not have a petal or sepal, like roses and daisies; they have a tougher structure called tepals that open just like petals. This "primitive" bloom allows botanists to understand prehistoric flowers through a living species. Because magnolias pre-date bees, scientists believe they relied on beetles for pollination.
