A lovely souvenir from the 1800's when a cultural tour of Europe, called The Grand Tour, was the thing to do...for those who could afford it. People bought fans, paintings, jewelry, trinkets and trinket boxes to show off where they’d been. This box with a classic mille fiori glass mosaic would have been gathered on the Italian portion of the tour, probably in Venice. While some Grand Tour trinket boxes have survived, those with a mosaic are a rare treasure.
Antique mixed metals with glass mosaic and beveled glass sides, new cushion. Approximate measurements: 3" across and 3" tall (with mosaic) exterior, 2.25" wide, 1.25" deep inside. Handle with care and keep away from humidity, children, pets, and shelf edges. (Price includes extra shipping insurance.)
With very few mosaic tiles missing, and only minor scratches and fleabites to the glass, this box has stood the test of time. Her cushion, however, was not original nor was it in good shape. We gave her a modern cushion with fresh cotton lining and olive green silk.
Mille fiori is an Italian glass art that means a thousand flowers. Thin strands of glass are fused together to create patterned tubes that show as floral patterns when the tubes are cut. Bella!
