Damascene Bird Cufflinks
Elegant birds and foliage express song and movement in this lovely example of Damascene metalwork. Designs are etched into oxidized metal, then inlaid with gold threads and foil. This ancient decorative art originated in Damascus during the 8th Century and was adopted in Spain, where these were made. Originally earrings, these beauties have now evolved into cufflinks.
Midcentury mixed metal. Unmarked but provenance recorded by prior owner indicated acquisition in Spain.
Spain's national bird or ave nacional is the Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti). It primarily lives and breeds in Spain, but makes appearances in Portugal, Algeria, Monaco, and France.
