A pair of peafowl, red and blue, meet in a pastoral garden on this antique French faience box. Cheerful flowers and dragonflies decorate every side, while bamboo and floral designs adorn the hardware. As a gift for a loved one or a dreamy addition to your own bedroom, this delightful antique box is charming as can be!

Faience is tin-glazed earthenware, primarily made in France and Germany, that is fired, dipped in a tin glaze, hand painted, and fired again. It took a steady hand to paint this enamel with such fine lines and a variety of colors. The joined AP signature indicates the work of Adolphe & Arthur Porquier, between 1895-1903 (we have seen a similar design attributed to them), however other French makers used a joined AP as well.

Antique pottery and brass tone metal. Measures approximately 5" x 3" x 2.25" tall (closed). In good condition for its age, with a few stubborn rust spots inside and wear to the glaze at base. Otherwise no cracks or chips. Latch snaps closed. Note: do not use this container to store edible items.

Peacocks (formally called Peafowl) are naturally green or blue. The blue variety lives in India and Sri Lanka; the green peacock inhabits Java and Myanmar, and yet another species lives in tropical Africa. These showy birds have been introduced all over the world, frequently inhabiting public gardens and behaving in perfectly natural ways. The free-roaming peafowl at the Bronx Zoo roost overnight in the trees, right along with the local wild turkeys.
